Our Lady of Good Success

The Extraordinary Revelations of
Our Lady of Good Success

It was in the year 1634 when, at 3 o'clock in the morning on February 2, Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres, abbess of the Conceptionist convent in the city of Quito, saw the lamp that burned in the sanctuary near the Blessed Sacrament flicker out, leaving the church in total darkness. Her senses then became numb, and she saw a heavenly light that illuminated the whole church. It was the Queen of Heaven who, after making the wick resume its flame, spoke these words to Mother Mariana: "Beloved daughter of my heart, I am Mary of Good Success, thy mother and protectress - - -"
After making prophetic and moving predictions about the death of the seer and the future of the monastery, Our Lady of Good Success went on to explain to Mother Mariana the various meanings of the sanctuary lamp going out. "In the nineteenth century-towards Its end-and throughout the greater part of the twentieth, many heresies will abound in this land, which will then be a free republic. The precious light of the Faith will become extinguished in souls due to the almost total corruption of customs - At that time there will be great calamities, both physical and moral, public and private. The few souls preserving devotion to the Faith and the virtues will suffer cruel and indescribable distress, as well as prolonged martyrdom; many of them will go to the grave because of the violence of the suffering and will be considered martyrs who sacrificed themselves for the Church and the Nation. To obtain freedom from the slavery of those heresies, those whom the merciful love of my Most Holy Son shall destine for such restoration- ration will need great strength of will, constancy, valor and much confidence in God. In order to test the Faith and confidence of the Just, moments will come when everything will seem lost and paralyzed, but then will he the happy beginning of the complete- restoration."
"Pray with insistence, asking our Heavenly Father to put an end to such evil times, for the love of the Eucharistic Heart of my Most Holy Son, and to send to this Church the prelate, my very beloved son, whom my Most Holy Son and I love with the love of predilection, who is to revive the spirit of her priests; for we shall endow him with extraordinary skill, humility of heart, docility towards divine inspirations, fortitude to defend the rights of the Church, and a tender and compassionate heart so that, like another Christ, he may attend the great and the small without disdain for the most wretched who come, in doubt and bitterness, to seek the light of his counsel; and so that, with divine suavity, he may guide the souls consecrated to the divine service in the cloisters, without making the yoke of the Lord heavy for them, for He Himself said, `My yoke is sweet and my burden is light.' In his hand shall be placed the scale of the sanctuary so that all may be done with weight and measure, and that God may be glorified ..."

Predictions of Terrible Punishments

"...all kinds of punishments shall come, among which shall be pestilence, hunger, strife among the people and foreigners, who will lead a great number of souls to apostasy and perdition ....And to dissipate these black clouds that hide the clear day of the Church's freedom, there shall be a formidable and frightening war in which shall flow the blond of the native-born and of foreigners, of regular and secular priests, and also that of nuns. That night shall be most horrible, for it shall seem to mankind that evil has triumphed; and then my hour will have come to dethrone proud Satan in an astonishing way, crushing him under my foot and chaining him in the infernal abyss, thus finally freeing the Church and the nation from his cruel tyranny."

Our Lady Herself Orders the Making of Her Statues

Over and over again Mother Mariana had heard of the terrible moral aberrations of the twentieth century and of the consequent punishments through which humanity would pass. The burning heart of the foundress could not accept the diabolical attempts at the destruction of her work and her convent with indifference. She had even implored God for the miracle of keep her alive to personally fight against the forces of evil in the twentieth century. However, the Blessed Virgin Herself wanted to take command of the battle. In 1610 She had said to the abbess:
"I ask and command you to have a statue of me made for the consolation and support of my monastery and the faithful of that time (the twentieth century). The bishop should give It the name of Mary of Good Success of the Purification or of Candlemas. I shall take complete possession of this, my house, and take upon myself the responsibility of keeping it safe and free from all harm until the end of time. "Gabriel, Michael and Raphael, along with the whole angelic choir, will secretly take charge of the making of my statue. For this purpose, you shall call Francisco del Castillo, who is a proficient sculptor, and give him a brief description of my measurements just as you have seen me today and always."
On January 16,1611, "early in the moming, the fervent nuns arose to pray the Little Office. Upon reaching the choir they heard melodious harmonies; they hastened to enter and beheld-O prodigy! -the choir, shining with a celestial light, and heard angelic voices singing the Salve Sancta Parens in a suave and enchanting harmony, to the sound of celestial music; and they saw that the Archangels had already finished the holy statue, whose beautiful countenance sent forth brilliant rays of light into the choir and the whole church. The visage, in the midst of that brilliant light that emanated from the statue, was not severe, but majestic, serene, sweet, kind and as if inviting her daughters to approach their mother with confidence. The Divine Child was perfection itself, and his expression was one of love and tenderness for spouses so favored by His Heart."
The veracity of this miracle was sworn to in a handwritten document by the very artist who had been commissioned to carve the statue.
